Bring the Noise (Public Enemy)

Celebrating 25 years since the release of their first record Yo! Bum Rush the Show, Public Enemy kicked off their Australian tour this past week in Brisbane at The Hi-Fi club. Chuck D and Flavor Flav were in fine form, clock and all. Backed by a full band, they tore thru their setlist of genre defining material.

In the photo pit, it was somewhat crowded as six other photographers and I all competed for the best angles. Although the fairly static lighting wasn’t terribly exciting during the first three tunes, it did allow for significantly faster post processing with less variables in play.

Have a look here for a more thorough review and check out the images below.

Elbow w/Bombay Bicycle Club @ The Tivoli

It’s been almost one year since I first saw and heard Elbow perform at Coachella 2011. It was definitely a highlight of the festival. To say I was excited to see them again here in Brisbane a year later is an understatement. The opportunity to shoot them, even more so.

Supported by Bombay Bicycle Club, Elbow played a superb set to a sold-out crowd. Despite a few technical hiccups, Guy Garvey was in fine form, leading the enthusiastic audience through the bands collection of finely crafted songs. Bombay Bicycle Club also delivered a decent opening set.

Fortunately, Elbow kicked off with three relatively long songs, translating into more pit time. The lighting was generally very good, albeit pretty heavy with blues and purples at times. The Tivoli is quickly becoming a favourite live music venue.

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti @ The Zoo

The last time I saw Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, they were supporting The Flaming Lips on their Canadian tour. This time around, however, they headlined at local Brisbane live music venue The Zoo. Supporting them were local indie acts Magic Spells and Dune Rats.

The Zoo sees it’s fair share of live music leaning heavily towards the indie scene. For any local Calgarians that remember, were you to combine Dickens and The Night Gallery, you’d end up with something resembling The Zoo.

Despite relatively dim lighting, I managed to grab some decent frames during the three acts. Which leads me to two suggestions:

1. If you’re a club owner and want to see your venue portrayed in good light (pun intended), have a look at your current lighting. Review online and print photos from your venue. Compare with others. Are the images generally dark and somewhat lacklustre?  Perhaps there are simple ways to improve stage lighting while still maintaining a certain vibe.

2. If you’re a band and want to stand out above the rest, have a look at the available stage lighting at load-in. Generally, if all you have to work with are static cans, adjust mic stand placement so your members are under lights most of the time. Additionally, see if lights can adjust to meet your stage plot. Nothing leads to fewer photos than a front man standing in the dark.

Enjoy the photos. More to come in due time!
